About University of Melbourne (UNIMELB)

The University of Melbourne is located in Melbourne, Australia. It is a public research university founded in the year 1853, UNIMELB is Australia’s second oldest university and the oldest university in Victoria, hence it is called the sandstone university. The main campus of the university is located in Parkville, north of the Melbourne central business district, and other campuses located across Victoria. The university is a member of many national and international groups like the Group of Eight, Universities 21 and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities etc. Since the year 1872 many residential colleges have been affiliated to the university. The main campus contains around 12 colleges within and near it; these colleges offer academic, sporting and cultural programs alongside accommodation for Melbourne students and faculty.

The university comprises 11 separate academic units. Numerous institutes and research centres are associated with the university; these include the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research and the Grattan Institute, Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health. The Melbourne Business School, the Melbourne Law School and the Melbourne Medical School are three amongst the university’s 15 graduate schools which are particularly well regarded.The university has many notable alumni which include Nine Nobel laureates who have either been students or faculty. The university also educated four of Australian prime ministers and five governors-general; they were graduated from this very university.


The UNIMELB is ranked 33rd in the world by the Times Higher Education, and ranked 40th in the world by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. The university was ranked 31st in the world (2nd nationally) by the recent CWTS Leiden Ranking. In 2016, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has given UNIMELB 40th position in its global rankings. The UNIMELB is ranked 5th in the for education, 8th in law, 13th in computer science and IT, 13th in arts and humanities, 14th in accounting and finance, 14th in dentistry and 18th in medicine by the QS World University Subject Rankings 2015.
